Last Words Part 4

Last Words – almost  Part 4  Uhhhhhh – More Ouch~!

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.   (2Pe 1:5-14)  ESV

“is so nearsighted that he is blind”
Lit.: is blind or short-sighted

Blind:  τυφλός,  tuphlós; to envelop with smoke, be unable to see clearly. Blind Figuratively in respect to the mind as being blind, ignorant, stupid, slow of understanding.
  • The adjective typhlós denotes human and animal blindness. It then refers to objects without light or access (cf. blind alleys) and also to what is invisible or concealed.
  •  In 2  Pet.  1:9 it is the unfruitful rather than the ignorant who are blind and shortsighted (cf. vv. 5-6). Rev.  3:17 complains that the Laodicean church thinks it is spiritually rich but is really blind. Only Christ (v. 18) can cure this blindness of self-deception and complacency. KTD

Nearsighted:  muōpázō;  muōpásō, from múōps, shortsighted, which is derived from múō , to shut, and ōps, the eyes. To shut the eyes, blink, to squint like one who cannot see clearly; hence by implication to be nearsighted. Used metaphorically in 2Pet. 1:9.

Some interpret this as saying that those referred to are so shortsighted they may as well be blind.  Other insert the word “or” in the verse differentiating between shortsightedness and completely blind.  I prefer the view that these folks are so shortsighted they may as well be blind.

There’s no big reason for my preference except that the overall indication is that these people are believers and as such I have a hard time considering them utterly blind.  They see but are unable to see clearly.
I am disgustingly short-sighted.  The greatest problem I have is in recognizing people when I am not wearing my glasses.  I’ve looked right at someone I know well and have not acknowledged them because although I could “see” them I could not distinguish them from anyone else at the same distance.  I have often used the phrase, “without my glasses, I’m blind.”  This, I believe, is what Peter is referring to.  It is a lack of clarity, the inability to make close distinctions, an inability to recognize things for what they are.

Ah, but it gets worse.
“having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins”
Forgotten:  “ληθη  λαβων”
  • Ληθη, lḗthē:  from lanthánō , to forget. Forgetfulness, oblivion (2Pet. 1:9). This is the word from which "lethal" and "lethargy" are derived.
  • Λαβων from λαμβάνω,  lambánō
    •  From the basic sense 'to take,' lambánō acquires the active senses a. 'to take to oneself,' 'to receive,' 'to collect,' and b. 'to seize.'  It also takes on the more passive sense 'to acquire' and middle 'to hold or grasp something or someone.' KTD
    •   Sometimes means to receive as merely a self-prompted action without necessarily signifying a favorable reception. In the NT, to actively take, and, partially in the passive sense, to receive.

The gist here is that they have not seized the fact and implications of their:
Purification (from their former sins): καθαρισμός,  katharismós; gen, to make clean.
It actually refers to the process of purification, the sacrifice of purification.
The purification of women (Luk_2:22; Sept.: Lev_14:32; Lev_15:13; see Lev. 12); ritual purification (Mar_1:44; Luk_5:14; Joh_2:6). The baptism both of John and the Lord Jesus is designated as katharismós in Joh_3:25, not that the ritual of physical baptism brought about spiritual results or spiritual purification, but only as a parallel in its results. As water cleanses the body in baptism, the grace it symbolizes cleanses the soul. Its designation as a "baptism of repentance for the remission of sins" (Mar_1:4; Luk_3:3; Act_2:38) means an identification with the forgiveness of sins. In Heb_1:3, the word denotes the objective removal of our sins by Jesus Christ (see Heb_9:22-23; Sept.: Exo_30:10; Job_7:21). In 2Pe_1:9, it refers to the actual purification accomplished in man, while in Heb_1:3 to the propitiation provided by the Lord Jesus.
  •  katharós, katharízō, kathaírō, katharótēs.  The group denotes physical, religious, and moral cleanness or purity in such senses as clean, free from stains or shame, and free from adulteration.
  •  The purity required of the NT community is moral and personal. It consists of a dedication to God that renews the inner being. Purity of heart - which is far above purity of hands - is what counts before God.
  •  Hebrews opposes to the older ritual purity the superior moral purity of the new order (9:13). Cleansing is still needed (cf. 9:22), but only Christ's blood can achieve this with its cleansing from sin (1:3) and liberation from sinful impulses (9:14).

Now, here I see an interesting thing.  The blindness suffered is a blindness to their condition in Christ as well as their obligation in Christ.

We’ve seen Peter’s admonition to practice in order to make one’s election and calling sure.  Perhaps (and I hold this) the biggest problem in not practicing is that we are not sure in our election and calling.  In this state we suffer a lack of clarity – an inability to make sound distinctions.

Not only a lack of clarity, but we are constantly tormented with a lack of assurance of which the world, the flesh and the devil all take advantage.  We don’t know, we can’t say, so in fear we freeze in place, a stationary target.

We get caught in between our Rock and a hard place (the Flesh).  Our Rock says we are His forever.  Our flesh (along with the world and the devil) says otherwise.  We are sure one moment and then terrified the next.  We are confident one day and hiding the next.  We’re a lot like Israel in the wilderness wandering around between Egypt and the Land of the Promise.  Back and forth, back and forth………

But like Israel in the wilderness, God is with us and for us.  We are His by the Word of His promise and NOT by anything we have or have not done.

Practice = living in the truth of our election and call.  If not perfectly, at least consistently as we are able.
Like Israel in the wilderness, these “blind” folks have seen but they don’t see.  Their shoes never wear out and yet they doubt.  They are well fed yet they fear hunger.  They are well fed but are dissatisfied with their fare.  God consistently demonstrates His faithfulness and yet they don’t SEE it.

Of course you never know if the bridge will support you until you walk on it.  This is the purpose of practice.  As we practice (however poorly), we should remember it is all in His hands, under His control.  He isn’t up there with a stop watch or a tape measure.  He grades not on the curve but on the cross.

Have you ever seen an adult throw a child into the air and catch them and then heard the child cry out, “Do it again, do it again!!?”  This is a great picture of how you and I need to work on trusting Him.  As we practice, we are (from our point of view) taking a risk, we’re walking by faith.  While we’re in the air it might be a little frightening – but – He has promised He will be there to catch us.

Now I’m not talking about some ill-considered action taken without prayer, study and counsel.  Yes, if you step of the roof of your house, God can catch you – but when did He tell you to step off your roof?  I am talking about practicing what Peter admonishes us to practice in the verses we’re coming to.

I can sympathize with the believer who feels overwhelmed as God calls them to a mission field or a new undertaking of any sort.  It’s a little (to say the least) intimidating.  But that is not what Peter is calling us to.  And yet, all too many forget they are utterly redeemed and hesitate to risk not getting it perfect.
Near-sighted so as to be blind having too much lethargy to grasp the truth of their Redemption and live it???

Hey! 032012

Hey!
How are ya doing?
I know you’re out there!
Are you hiding?
Come on – what’s up?
Doubting Him again?
Doubting you again?
Doubting again?
Doubting doesn’t mean you’re “double minded.”
It probably means you’re tired.
It may mean you’re trying to do it on your own again.
It may mean you’ve got a flu bug.
It may mean you need a break, a hug, good counsel, encouragement, etc.
But,
It does mean you need.
And that’s OK
We all do –
Often –
A lot –
That’s what He says.
Does what we do matter?
Does it matter if what we do matters?
To whom?
Why?
What does mattering look like?
“I want to make a difference in this world!!”
What’s a difference?
How much difference counts?
“I want to glorify Him!”
Good, keep breathing!
“I want to please Him!”
You do.
He said so.
He made it so.
But    But    But    But - - - -
No “BUTS.”
No “IFS.”
Yeah – you want to say “But…” again don’t you?
Go ahead – He knows, He understands, He sympathizes – He “gets it.”
Of course,
You’re only as OK as He is.
Mmmmmmm ----
He’s uber-OK! Always!
You’re “in Him” how could you ever not be OK?
You’re still thinking “BUT…”
That’s OK
The day is coming
When all you’ll say is
“Oh….!!!”
And smile.

Never more safe .......

021312
Never more safe.....
"We are never more safe, never have more reason to expect the Lord's help, than when we are sensible that we can do nothing without His help."

"He has a sovereign right to do with us as He pleases; and if we consider what we are, surely we will confess we have no reason to complain; and to those who seek Him, His sovereignty is exercised in the way of grace.  All shall work together for good; everything is needful that he sends; nothing can be needful that He withholds."  John Newton

Do you ever find yourself feeling and perhaps thinking that Jesus is only concerned about you occasionally?  Do you ever feel as though the Holy Spirit is more a visitor than a resident?  Do you sometimes feel estranged from God?

Some of us do - some not so much.  But perhaps, for many of us, it is we who are strangers, we who are occasional.

They say there are no atheists in foxholes - and there are probably fewer in the oncologist's office.  But we cannot offer such people anything more than the gospel - which - if they are called, is sufficient and more so.

It is the Child of God with which I am concerned.  That one whom from all eternity is God's however lately they have discovered it - or it has discovered them.

It is a easy thing to be redeemed and no harder to remains so yet that assurance is constantly attacked by the desire for it all now.

"Satan wispers in our ears, "Why does God delay?"  Satan hint that, "Perhaps you have so displeased Him that He has left you."  The evil air carried all the wisperings of Satan and never more so that when our flesh is pinched or crushed by our circumstances.

There is a point where even the mighty oak is neither nut nor tree but both.  As God works His wonderousnand observable will upon the acorn to grow His mighty Oak there is indeed a time of vulnerability.  We as we grow from nut to tree may have a sense of vulnerability but since God's intent is that we be oaks we must trust that indeed we will.

But let us not I imagine all oaks are or all nuts will be identical trees.  Certainly the nature and the attributes of every oak are alike or similar and so it is with each of us.  Yet God does not create or call His from an assembly line.  We are all, in Him, the same - but different.  It is to the "likeness" of Christ He mofes and mold us.  That is likeness not sameness.  We will never be and we were never intended to be Christ - rather to be like Him.

Tall, short, thin, stout, fast slow -- oh what variety God has among His people and how wonderfully does He fit that likeness of Christ upon each individual unique child.  You - are to You in Him.  I am to be I.  We are to have I common His righteousness.  Whether we have else in common is irrelevant.

You may like purple I may like orange yet we both are His.  I may prefer quiet reflexion you may prefer joyous and lud praise yet we are both His.

In all of this we share the circunstance of living in a world who prince is set upon our injury.  He cannot destroy us but he can do us grevous injury.  As any prince he has his subjects and whether they know or acknowledge it they serve him and him alone.  It is the enhancement of the damnation of the u redeemed and the confusion and frustration of the redeemed that is their only goal.  This danger we, the sales of the Lord of Lords, also share in common.

Whether directly or indirectly all the Redeemed are always under attack.  If the prince of this world hates us and aims at our destruction, it is not possible even though unaware, that his servants do not aim at the same end.

IN ALL THIS - regardless of its intensity or duration we need only hold to one thought:

Phi 1:6  And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. ESV

In this we see all.  Beginning - bringing and completion.
Forget not who HE is.  Forget not who we are, HIS.

Jam 4:1-6
Chapter 4

Warning Against Worldliness

1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
 ESV

Tit 2:11-13
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self- controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
 ESV

Heb 12:7-14
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.  12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. 14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
 ESV

Phi 4:11-14
11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. ESV

More from the forums . . . .

I've been in some forums lately where believers and anti-believers lock horns and halos. It's distressing to read the hate spewed out by the anti-believers but it's equally distressing to read the nasty (and the dumb) responses from my brothers and sisters in Christ. But as I read these exchanges I begin to wonder if the force behind the attacks on our faith are more fear inspired than anything else.

James tells us that demons believe in God and tremble. I wonder if that's not equally true of anti-believers.

I believe that anger is a secondary emotion. What I mean is that underliing anger is either pain, fear or both. I'm not expousing some rule or deep insight but in my experience most angry people are either hurting or scared people.

Keeping in mind that these anti-believers are hurting or afraid drastically changes my view, approach and response. By keeping this in mind I find I am able to be compassionate (avoiding condescention) and that this greatly lessens the sting of their attacks. It also helps me listen better. I listen for the pain and fear and just let the anger and hatred go.

I'm commited to the fact that I don't "convert" anyone. I don't argue anyone into the kingdom. I can prove that there was a man Jesus who lived and died when the scriptures and extra-biblical documents say but I can't prove He was who He said (and others said) He was. So I don't even try.

Rarely do I even tell my, "how I came to Jesus," story. Certainly I'll share the dynamics of living out my faith but the tendency for that to become a "what's in it for you and me" conversation is very strong.

See, the gospel, the good news is the redemption from God's righteous wrath. It's not about having a "good" life it's about having eternal life.

But we, in our desire to "sell" Jesus have fallen into the trap of, well, selling it in fleshly terms. Health and wealth, peace and prosperity are the biggies. We try to convince folks that being a believer will make life "better." Ask Paul and Stephen about the "better" thing. A line from a poem by Richard Harris gets me: "who gave you the right to turn Christ into a bullet and shoot it into men's hearts?" He ends the poem with: " Our Father which art in heaven, sullied be thy name."

When we reduce Christ into a commodity we sully His name. When we reduce Him to a cosmic panecia we sully His name. When we reduce Him to a pithy one liner on a T-shirt or bumper sticker, we sully His name.

Where is the powerful witness of the Prophets in our lives today? Where is the crying out for repentance? Where is the voice crying out about the coming judgement?

We, I speak in general terms, don't want the world to hate us so we approach the world in a conciliatory manner. But we approach the world about US and how they feel and think about us. IT IS NOT ABOUT US!!!"

Jesus tells us to, "be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." Well, if the forums on the internet are any indication we've got the serpent part down pat. It's the dove part we've lost or ignored.

Anti-believers are not MY enemies. They are HIS enemies. He does not need me to defend Him. I do need Him to defend me.

Do you KNOW the gospel? Or do you just know the marketing materials? The gospel is not, "Jesus loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life." That's marketing hooey.

The gospel - the good news - does not exist in isolation from the truth - or if you prefer, the bad news. The good news is not that Jesus makes things better. The good news is that Jesus died to redeem us from the justly deserved wrath of God!!! The good news is not that the creation is getting better. The good news is that when God destroys this fallen creation there will be a new one in which we will live in fellowship with Him.

We are not here to make the world good but to do His good while we're here. We are to wait and to witness - witness not only to Him and the redemption He brings but to witness to the NEED for that redemption I view of His impending righteous judgement.

Argue all you like on forums and in the street but stick to the point - the gospel. Evolution, abortion, ect. are all issues we can discuss but when we focus on the issues which are normal in a fallen world and do not focus on the gospel we're wasting breath and time.

Anti-believers are scared and rightly so. Pray He will use you to address that fear compassionately and correctly.

Black Friday - Finger Thinking

Gal 1:7  not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

Troubled believers:   used of the mind, to stir up, trouble, disturb with various emotions such as fear, put in trepidation.

Distorted gospel:  To turn about from one direction to another
Tit 1:9-16  He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.  (10)  For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.  (11)  They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.  (12)  One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."  (13)  This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,  (14)  not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.  (15)  To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.  (16)  They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Remedy:  YOU
Eph 4:12-14  to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,  (13)  until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,  (14)  so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

2Ti 3:16-17  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  (17)  that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Tit 2:1  But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.

I regret to have to say it but to too great a degree, followers of the Redeemer are not as much “little children,” as they are “Cretans.”  I know, “OUCH!”  But somewhere along the live too many believers have come to equate coming to Him as , “little children,” as meaning they get to remain, “little children.”

But this is completely contrary to scripture.

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.  (Heb 5:12-14)

Certainly there is much in scripture that provokes a resounding, “Huh????” but those are not issues about which we have to worry.  But it is the issues of:
What really is the gospel?
What is salvation?
3.    What is redemption?
4.    What is justification?
5.    What is sanctification?
6.    What is discipleship?
7.    What are the best practices for the believer?
8.    What are the key doctrines of the faith?
9.    What are the false doctrines to be cautious of?

Jesus did not say, “You will have the truth in a reference book of study bible and it will set you free.”  He did say, “You shall KNOW the truth and the  truth shall set you free.”
“Bondage,” is a biggy in the church to day.  Bondage to that, bondage to this.  But why are we so attracted to this when we are clearly told:

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  (Joh 8:36)

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. (Rom 6:14)

But, perhaps it’s just more fun to tickle the devil than serve the Son.  It’s easier to be “poor little me,” than “more than conquerors.”  Perhaps we prefer to have our ears tickled.

Being “anti-church” is a biggy today.  We need more intimacy, more Jewishness, less authority, less structure – which actually reduces down to less responsibility and accountability which is just fine with too many.

Over the course of 2000 we haven’t gotten it “right,” yet.  So we need to go back – not to the beginning of the church, oh no, but back to Sinai and start over.  If perhaps we were just more Judaic, relevant, contemporary, whatever, we’d get it right.

I wonder if the problem is not really one of ingratitude.  Yeah, that’s right.  See, it’s not enough that the Son of God died and paid the price for my sin that I might stand before God redeemed.  Oh no, that’s not good enough.  I want to feeeeeeeeeeeeeeel something, have stuff to show for it, prove Him by my circumstances, be like the Joneses only christian, not be peculiar, not offend, not be persecuted --- ad infinitum.  Oh and don’t forget, “I want the world to really like me!”

If I had to vote, I’d cast my ballot for the attitude of , “Not good enough!” being the root cause of the stupidity, childishness, compromise and even heresy we see in the mass of so called believers today.

The mark of a believer is simply a faith inspired and based working devotion to the God of the scriptures.  A commitment to Him above any other.  A submission to Him before any other.  A loyalty to Him beyond any other.  He ain’t your pal, your bud, you bff.  He is your GOD – the GOD.  How did that ever lose its power to humble us and even embolden us?
God belongs in a box.  The box He built.  He determines who and how He is and thankfully He communicates it quite clearly to us.

But, we don’t like His box – especially the box (boundaries and expectations) He has for us.
We want a big ol fluffy God that we can snuggle up to and tease and joke with.  Well, there’s no reason we can’t do that with THE God as long as in doing so we don’t diminish who He is and His right to command us and our obligation to obey.

There is gravity – if I hold a rock shoulder height and let it go it falls.  This is the way it’s supposed to be – there is NOTHING special about it – nothing.

There is God – He made me, He sustains me and as uncomfortable as it makes us, He owns me.  He commands, I obey.  This is the way it’s supposed to be – there is NOTHING special about it – nothing.

What is wrong, unnatural weird and scary is when the apple floats and I disobey.  There is no merit in the apple falling, we don’t say, “Good apple, special apple.”  Neither is there any merit in obedience.  We should have comfort in obedience and perhaps encouragement because that is the normal state of things.

OK, I know – enough already.  Why do I subject you to these all too frequent rants???
Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated-- of whom the world was not worthy--wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.   (Heb 11:36-38)

We might well find ourselves among these “others,” all too soon.

In the words of the TV show:
“Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?”
Or, even worse
“Whatcha gonna do if they don’t come for you?”

A ministry of "Being there . . . ." Thank you!

After I wrote my “help me,” article ( and please excuse the pity-party) I got some very kind and insightful responses.  It’s a challenge – at least weekly – to keep plugging on amid all the vain, egotistical and the valid questions/issues that present themselves.  Oh yeah, vanity my dear sneaky and irritating friend.

BUT where I seem to always end up is looking back and asking, “what if I had not been there?”  This is not an ego thing – it’s not about “ME” it’s about having been there to do what He gave me to do.  It’s is about availability.  When I felt the call to serve my Aunt gave me a Bible and in it she wrote, “The inexhaustible supplies of God are available to the man who is available to the inexhaustible supplies of God.”  It’s interesting as I grope my way out of the doldrums to look back on how often I found myself unavailable and how the supplies were either not to be found or more dangerously, not from Him.

In both my “labors” people often tell me, “You’d be a great – this or that,” and I appreciate it.  But I know (although vanity makes me forget) that knowing myself better than they do – I really wouldn’t make a great, this or that.  I can only be a (great???) me.  Oh, I’d be good at many things – but only for a time.  History (mine) seems to demonstrate that when I follow another path I, well, get lost easily and quickly only to find myself right back where I was – right where I am.

I know a lot of you have the same struggle.  Somehow the thought, I ought to be  “X” or I wish I was “X” gets in your head.  You make a change and head that way and “BAM,” you find yourself somewhere you don’t want to be doing something you don’t want to do – even if it’s a good place you’re in or a good thing you’re doing, you know it’s not YOUR place or His place for you.

It’s not uncommon to find ourselves wanting better or wanting more, especially when it comes to respect and kudos, recognition yeah, and money.  At least I know it’s not for me.  But I have to keep banging my head to remember that being faithful in little does not mean you’re supposed to or will get much to be faithful with.  I wonder if little isn’t what I’m best at being faithful in and that much would be dangerous.

For those of you I’ve had the wondrous privilege of serving, I want you to know that I would not exchange that opportunity for anything.  I appreciate your acknowledging His using me in your lives BUT maybe I need to make it clearer how He has used you in mine and Patti’s.  Every opportunity to care for every single sheep has made our lives fuller and more secure.

You see, talking with you about your “stuff” exposed ours.  The exposure of our “stuff” leads us to Him.  I hope this doesn’t sound bad but the best advice I ever got was advice I gave you.  Come on, how many of you have quoted me back to me and shut me up?  Had YOU not been there I would never have been in a place, at a time, to deal with a particular issue.  He brought me there through YOU!  Thank you.

I need, I think, to learn better how to despise the “other master” that messes with my head.  I need to learn to not ask, “Why don’t I XXXX?” in terms of ministry and rather ask “Why do I  XXX?”  I do XXX under his sovereignty.  Hello?!?!?!?!?!?

Thank you all for your responses.  The smack on the head and the e-hugs were blessings.
So where am I now?  Right where I need to be.  I want to be part of His inexhaustible resources that are available to those who are available – and in need.

Available – to Him and to His – in the manner He has made me.

I love this quote – and really ought to get it tattooed so I quit forgetting it:
“I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am”    ― John Newton

Another –

He drew a circle that shut me out —
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love (GOD) and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in.

Thank you all for your insights and encouragements.  I know you know we all have those moments (or days or weeks or months) when we question and wonder, “What if?”

I appreciate your being patient with mine!

William Bridge (1600s) wrote in his book, A Lifting Up for the Downcast:

“Be sure you understand your comforts rightly. Be not mistaken in them. Labor to distill and refine your comforts. As there was a mixed company came out of Egypt, which set the Israelites a murmuring, so there is a mixed company thqat comes with your comforts. Everfy creature is born into the world with some filth. When you have comfort. Labor to find out and separate the dross and filth; put away that mixed company.”

Eph 5:10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

The context of Eph. 5 addresses the concerns of brother Bridge. We are not to have anything to do with the darkness. But it is so easy – isn’t it?

What comforts you? What pleases, entertains, inspires or gives you rest? Who comforts you? Who gives you pleasure and a sense of worth?
One way to discover this is to ask, “What, when it or they are unavailable distresses me?” “What potential loss or disappointment disturbs me comfort?”

Or, more importantly, “Does what comforts me honor God and reflect my gratitude for His grace?”
This is a tough thing to do. The old Puritans were tough people – tough for the Lord. They encouraged what they called, the mortification of the flesh. That is the commitment to kill the old nature by intention, examination and an active surrender to the will of God.
Paul alludes to this when he writes:

1Co 3:3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?
1Co 9:27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
Gal 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
What makes you laugh? Lots of things – right? But do you examine it closely to see if the casue of your laughter honors God?

Now before you get all flustered and upset keep in mind that what Paul says:

Rom 6:12-13 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. (13) Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

“Let not . . . .” “Do not present . . . .”

We need very little help in identifying gross sin. It’s the subtle culturally acceptable sin that we have to hunt down and wring out. Especially those subtle sins which bring us comfort.

My favorite illustration is, of course, TV. Patti and I used to watch the show, The Gilmore Girls. It was cute and funny and, well a comfort just to sit and watch after a long day.
But we began to notice that the subtle messages of the show were about as sinful as they could get. Sin, encouraged in a nice, cute, “clean,” manner. The show had no moral base and the character’s moral positions were utterly subjective.

But the show was “innocent.” Innocent? Hardly. It offered a picture of sin with acceptable consequences. Sin that had no need of redemption.

If you watch an X rated movie you know it’s wrong. The G Girls however had no nudity or explicit sex – it just assumed it and assumed it was OK. Oh, it was “real life” in all its degeneracy and hopelessness but it was cute and funny and entertaining.

I’m not NOT encouraging you to go on some witch hunt. Remember:

Jas 3:2a For we all stumble in many ways.
Rom 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
Rom 6:17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
Rom 7:11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

Sin is a reality in our lives but we are not slaves to it. Sin has power but it has no power over us. We can yield to it but it cannot conquer us.

But, not being engaged by gross sin, we tend to take our ease. All the while the dross mixed into our comforts stunts our growth in Him.
What do we have to lose in examining our comforts and refining them, removing the subtle sinfulness to be found there? We have nothing to lose that is of any value and much of great value to gain.
Pray that the Spirit will begin this work in your heart and mind, leading you to question and examine your comforts for that which is false. Pray the Spirit will enable you to sense and see all that is no in accord with God’s desire for you.
Php 4:8-9 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (9) What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me--practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

The DANGERS of Home Schooling - EXPOSED !!!!!!

Well, somebody had to say it so I finally decided I would.
Here are a few of the real dangers of Home Schooling:
  • You begin to think pajamas are real clothes.
  • You actually have discussions with Mom and Dad.
  •   Quality time is a tsunami.
  • You learn to take personal responsibility for your responsibilities.
  • You begin to think pajamas are really clothes.
  • You learn to manage your time and your efforts.
  • You learn to questions so called “authorities” in a wide range of subjects.
  • You learn how wonderful curiosity is.
  • You discover you’re a real person with real value and great potential.
  • You may end-up successfully self-employed in a meaningful career.
  • You may miss out on being bullied.
  • You can really discover both your true limits and your true potential.
  • You begin to think pajamas are real clothes.
  • You actually learn to work with and value your siblings.
  • You learn to discover.
  • You miss out on being force fed culturally mandated hooey.
  • You learn to answer your own questions.
These are just a few of the real dangers of home schooling.
Think long and hard about them.  Is this the kind of children we want growing up and running the world?
More dangers later.
