Had a "business" meeting I was anxious about. I was getting a little obsessed about it and kept rehearsing it in my mind. of course this made doing anything else very difficult.
So I prayed - I simply told God that I was really tired of "chewing" on it and that it was distracting me from other things he had given me to do. I told Him quite plainly that I needed Him to take it out of my mind. I told Him that I had concluded that it was something He had to deal with because obviously I was not getting anywhere.
The next day and then the morning of the meeting every time the meeting came to mind I found myself distracted away from it to do something constructive - something I could do.
Patti asked me how I was doing and I had to tell her that every time the meeting came to mind I seemed to forget it almost immediately. it was like nothing I've ever experienced.
I went to the meeting with very little so say - and that I felt very calm about. I said my "thing" and shut-up. Once i had said my "piece" I was encouraging and gracious and calm.
What was so very interesting is that when I made my points there was no opposition or argument. I said what I believed I needed to say and the meeting went on to other things. that was absolutely un-expected.
Now maybe "my piece" was just ignored of blown-off but that was of no concern to me. I had a peace and confidence that could only have one source.
Oh, the ramifications of the meeting and "my piece" may be used to injure me but ya know, I really can't work up any true concern about it. I left the meeting in His hands and he did, in my view, a great job. so, I'll leave the results of the meeting with Him as well and just keep doing what He hands me to do.
Now I know me well enough to know that I'll find something else to get all anxious about - but I also know that I'll have that meeting to remember and rest in.
Peter's pen is in edit and This and That(s) are in the works - thank you all for at least peaking at the blog - it's a real encouragement.

Mind - Set
It is the trouble of troubles to have two inhabitants so
near in one soul, and these to strive one against another, in every action, and
at all times in every part and power in us: the one carrying us upward, higher
and higher still, till we come to God; the other pulling us lower and lower,
further from him. Sibbes, Richard (2012-04-24). The
Soul's Conflict With Itself: And Victory Over Itself By Faith. (p. 293). A
Puritan At Heart Press. Kindle Edition.
What a great trouble that needs great attention! The flesh and the Spirit battle it out. But there is comfort and remedy for the
distress this brings.
For to set the mind on
the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is
hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Rom 8:6-7
We’ve covered this before.
I don’t know about you, but for me it’s a place I run to more often than
ever before.
I am growing more and more convinced that there is comfort
and remedy in what Paul says here.
but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace
Ah, to set my mind.
Huh? Well, the Greek word carries
the idea of our: frame of thought, will, aspirations.
If you want to be picky the literal translation would be, “but
the mind of the Spirit.”
No, this isn’t the “Spirit’s” mind rather it is our mind in
or on the Spirit. So????
I’ve been reading Richard Sibbes’ book: The Soul’s
Conflict With Itself: And Victory Over Itself By Faith. It was written in 1635 and the language is “chewy”
at best but well worth the work. I do
recommend it for there is much in it that will bless and strengthen you.
But my point is that keeping my nose in it (as well as the
Word and other good books) goes a long way in keeping my mind “set.” Even when I have to read a passage a couple
of times to get past the old style of speaking it is a blessing. Filled with solid biblical insights it keeps
my mind set, it stimulates questions, it beings conviction, it brings relief,
comfort and peace.
Reading the Word as well as good trustworthy books by very
real believers is a consolation and encouragement. You don’t have to be a “great” reader just a
reader. If reading is not your thing
then there are Mp3’s and other tools to help you set your mind. I’m biased because he’s a Scott but the
sermons of Alistair Begg (Truth For Life) are excellent and very useful (and
they are free!!!). Buying a cheap Mp3
player or expanding your use of your smart-phone can be a powerful means of
setting your mind.
Feed your mind with healthy food and the Spirit’s voice will
grow louder, clearer and more comforting.

Peter’s Pen 1st Peter 1:2
(1Pe 1:2) according to the foreknowledge of God the
Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and
for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
You’ve heard the saying, “He said a mouthful.” Well, Peter says several mouths-full in this
verse.
Peter gives us a box in which we can see something about our
lives in Jesus. Our lives in Christ are:
1 1. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father
2 2. in the sanctification of the Spirit
3 3. or obedience to Jesus Christ
4 4. or sprinkling with his blood
Look at each point this way:
1 1. You are His and that is no surprise to God He
knew it and if He knew it He brought it to pass.
2 2. You are His inside and out, over and under and
His “seal” of the relationship, the Spirit, is in you an
upon you – and that
Spirit works in you making you like Him.
3 3. We couldn’t and wouldn’t obey without 1 and 2. Now we can and do. Don’t
go all legalistic on me
now - !
4 4. Huh? This
means you are His forever. His blood has
cleansed you and made you His dear child – and
this blood will always have its
effect.
I would love to launch into a lot of information about the
broad and deep meaning of this passage but I won’t. What Peter is telling you and I is that we
are His – period – not questions on His part and that ought to help us when we
question it on our part. He did it – it
is done!
One little – kool beans part. Notice that Peter tells us 1 and 2 were done
for obedience and then he mentions the sprinkling of the blood. For me that’s a comfort.
When I read “for obedience,” my flesh is very quick to tell
me how poorly I obey. I get this big
spreadsheet of all the rebellious and unthinking ways I disobey. I’m sure Peter knew all about this. I wonder how often his flesh reminded him of
his sins (see Peter in the Gospels).
So knowing that we would iinstantly default to our weak and
struggling obedience Peter with the Spirit’s guidance brings up the blood of
Jesus which cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
This knee jerk to our weakness/sin is what I call a “Romans
7 moment.” Get your Bible and read
Romans 7. Ouch! But please do not skip verse 25!!!!!
From there Paul writes:
There is therefore
now
no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus.(Rom 8:1)
There we are – this are us.
This is YOU!
Brothers and sisters, “in Christ,” no failure is ever
final. No one and nothing can undo what
God has done. Our hope here and our hope
for heaven is secured by Him – not by us.

Walk with P and me 11
Walk with P & me
11
It’s Saturday and we’re at the Bou. My “Mary” and “Martha” (Patti and Gloria) and
I were going over the Us in Him plans and just encouraging one another.
What’s is interesting is though we all know the task is
daunting, when we’re together and trusting Him, is seems less daunting. There was a serious joyfulness as we
discussed the “stuff” we needed to and the personal sharing that flowed through
the conversation was a real blessing.
We realized that when we were focused on Him and honoring
Him and serving Him a great deal of the tension and anxiety about our
circumstances seemed to melt away. Some
might call it simply a distraction but in my experience distractions are not so,
well, comforting.
I realized how blessed I am to have brothers and sisters who
are supportive and willing to express their views honestly and lovingly. Patti, Glo, Sinclair, Jim and Bruce are just
a few of those He has brought alongside to help craft the work He has for us to
do. Many others, in various ways, also
provide griss for the mill even though I don’t think they are aware of it. It is a real blessing and comfort to not be
alone or even “in charge” of this.
One of the things that came to mind from our talk was that
we need to leave time and space for God to work among us. Sure, you need order and some kind of form
but sometimes that can hinder or inhibit attention to Him. I don’t want there to be a need for Him to
“intrude” if you will – rather I want there to be ample opportunity for Him to
do whatever He wants to do.
I am learning my limits and interestingly enough I am
learning that although I am capable and skilled in doing this or that – He has
this or that for others to do – not me.
Even when it comes to the “vision” for the group I am learning to shut
up and listen and wait. That used to
frustrate me because I was the “man with the plan.” Now, I am just “a man in the plan” and it is
nothing short of wonderful.
I got some good feedback from one of the “come alongside to
help” people that made me aware of being too definitive and too narrow about
some things. Not doctrinal essentials
but other peripheral stuff. Re-reading
what I sent him to review I saw his point.
It wasn’t that what I had written was not right – rather it was not
written well. It built a fence that
didn’t need to be there.
I am drawn to think about what the Lord said:
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle
and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light." (Mat
11:29-30)
There is a certain legalism that can creep into any work –
even for Him. It’s that hellish demand
that one get everything right, that one be successful. It’s that carnal legalism that imposes the
criteria of the culture upon the work of the Kingdom. That’s the ungainly and oppressing “burden”
that keeps wantng to climb on your back.
Just before verse 29 in Matt. 11 the Lord says:
All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no
one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. (Mat 11:27)
What I have to keep in mind is that when the Lord says, “all
things,” He means all things. Not just
cosmic things, not just theological things, not just high and lofty things –
but “all things” like Us in Him – and every detail in and of it.
I don’t have a sense of “letting let go,” which is
nice. I do have a sense of, “let someone
else.” I wonder if in this type of
effort what we come to see as “my problem,” isn’t simply that we are
doing what He has prepared someone else to do.
It’s only a problem because we’re trying to do it and keeping His guy or
gal from their work.
That moves my mind to Paul’s teaching:
All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who
apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one
and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one
body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one
body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should
say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that
would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say,
"Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would
not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where
would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be
the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each
one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be?
(1Co 12:11-19)
Pray that this lesson will not be lost on any of us. Pray that we will celebrate, be grateful for
and make use of all the body parts He provides.
Pray especially that we each remember and comfort each other with, “If
all were a single member, where would the body be?”

Why wait till I'm dead?
Some of the letters of John Newton were published after he went "home." These have always been a true blessing to me and I have often wondered how many more would have been blessed had they been published in his life-time. But - He is sovereign.
I believe that if we are without practical applications for the beliefs we hold then holding those beliefs is, well, frustrating and just bad. But we have long surrendered the true meaning of disciple and have found quick fix programs and seminars more to our liking. This is a fact I mourn and well, despise. So we're gonna do some disciple training here - intermittently, intimately and dynamically.
The following set the circumstances and presents some of the problems. Join in - jump in. The catalyst for doing this has been prayer, conviction and Richard Sibbes' book, The Soul's Conflict With Itself. Walk with us but remember, ministry is messy. If this is not your cup of tea just pass them by.

The catalyst for doing this has been prayer, conviction and Richard Sibbes' book, The Soul's Conflict With Itself. Walk with us but remember, ministry is messy. Come, walk with us ----
In most of the passages in scripture that deal with perseverance
it is in relation to persecution and/or temptation. At this point in our sojourn Patti and I are
facing trials which have little to do with persecution or temptations are none
the less frightening and pressing. So I’ve
chosen to do a little finger thinking and share with you what I am learning –
or need to learn. I can’t get more practical
in my writing than that.
Of course, like it is for so many of you times are
tough. A recent serious decease in out
income has put us in a tenuous (to say the least) positron. As a tent-maker I have rarely sough the
support of others although there have been and are some kind souls who have shared
with us to help in meeting our needs.
Right now the temptation is to either fight or flee. To either take the bull by the horns or just
run away. The desire to “fix” it is one
of the biggest problems. The flesh in it’
incessant bid for control conjures up all kind of schemes and ideas and vaporous
imaginings. It also encourages one to
rail at God and others about how we’ve served and not we suffer (OK – it feels
like suffering but that is relative).
The temptation to cry out “Where are you?” both to God an
others is very strong but from the bitterness and arrogance I can detect
underneath that impulse it is very clear it is from the flesh. He and others have been there. He and some are still there. But when one has a sense of drowning,
rational reflection is very very difficult.
Another temptation is to be over burdened with blame. To play the, “I should have…” game on
myself. The thoughts that had I only
stayed in law enforcement or if I had only gone on in my education to be a psychologist/counselor
haunts me. I look back at the decision
to take up the ministry I believed I was called to and have feelings of shame
and guilt. Being the head of my
household just makes it worse.
Then there is the lovely thought (sarcasm) that Patti would
be better off without me and that if she’d just move and live with some of her
family her life would be better. She certainly
deserves better. She has sacrificed and
is firm in her conviction that we (that is I) have done the right thing and
that I should continue. But the little
voices tell me she loves me and want to encourage men and that though this is
sweet it’s just her being nice.
Of course then we have to figure in the embarrassment of
what may come as well as the losses. The
potential losses aren’t so bad for us – we’ve got too much “stuff” and if we
could have a monster yard sale I don’t think we’d miss much of what went. As long as I don’t even consider selling
Patti’s mom’s Chinese vases I’m safe ;-}.
Pride – pride has never been such a monster for me. Harboring that silly thought that somehow I
am in charge and this shouldn’t be happening and all that “stuff” steals
precious moments from each day keeping me from prayer and study and writing.
Then there’s that slithery thought that I have been wrong –
very wrong in thinking that such a weird and chaotic ministry could ever have
come from Him. I await that invisible
committee that comes with a chorus of either, “We could have told you..” or “We
never thought it was a real “ministry” anyway – we just considered it your delusion
– your error.” And of course there’s
that other comment/thought, “You should have gotten a REAL job.”
Yes, the flesh is alive and well in me. Of course I knew that – I know that. The hard part is to discern where the flesh
is using truth to drive me more towards myself and from God.
It’s kind of funny that I should have been reading Richard’s
Sibbes’ work, The Soul’s Conflict With itself; And Victory Over Itself By
Faith. That’s the book I’ve made so
many FB posts from.
I told Patti that had it not been for reading that book and
the scriptures referenced I would have yielded to the flesh instead of
resisting it. I’ll share with you (more
briefly than here) as we move through this time. I hope to be candid and honest for your
benefit and to help me see what’s going on in my heart and mind as well.
Sibbes wrote: “Ignorance,
being darkness, is full of false fears. In the night time men think every bush
a thief.” Sibbes, Richard (2012-04-24). The Soul's Conflict With
Itself: And Victory Over Itself By Faith. (pp. 47-48). A Puritan At Heart
Press. Kindle Edition.
So, with your indulgence, I’ll share with you as I work on
dispelling the ignorance/darkness that my flesh seeks to impose and grow.
Your prayers are of course greatly desired. Though your counsel, encouragement and
consolation would be a great blessing please remember that in the dark, all
cats are grey.
Put on then, as God's
chosen ones, holy and beloved,
compassionate hearts,
kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
(Col 3:12)

I really miss him.....
I had the honor of knowing Rich - not intimately except in the fact that his words and music are one of great blessings in my life.
OK - so maybe it's not kosher but here are the lyrics to one of my favorites - if you ever saw him perform just the lyrics will give you chills........

There's more that rises in the morning
Than the sun
And more that shines in the night
Than just the moon
It's more than just this fire here
That keeps me warm
In a shelter that is larger
Than this room
And there's a loyalty that's deeper
Than mere sentiments
And a music higher than the songs
That I can sing
The stuff of Earth competes
For the allegiance
I owe only to the Giver
Of all good things
So if I stand let me stand on the promise
That you will pull me through
And if I can't, let me fall on the grace
That first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy
That has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man
Who is longing for his home
There's more that dances on the prairies
Than the wind
More that pulses in the ocean
Than the tide
There's a love that is fiercer
Than the love between friends
More gentle than a mother's
When her baby's at her side
And there's a loyalty that's deeper
